Cleaning up a 48 year-old jazz recording

imageOur pet project at Audiobag is cleaning up recordings made almost a half century ago by Sonobeat Records — the company who introduced the world to Johnny Winter, Eric Johnson, and other great musicians who either lived or passed through Austin in the ’60s and ’70s. One of my personal favorite recordings was released digitally today on iTunes and Amazon.

My brother, co-founder with my father of Sonobeat Records, and I are excited about today’s digital release of Jazz to the Third Power by the Lee Arlano Trio.  The album was recorded in July of 1967 and was released in 1968 — making it the first album ever released by Sonobeat.

I could go into lengthy detail about how we turned a 48 year-old analog tape containing hiss, crackles, and a squeaky drum pedal into a crisp, clean digital recording, but I won’t. Instead, I hope you’ll take the opportunity to listen to samples of the recording on iTunes or Amazon.

If you love jazz as much as I do, you’ll love this album. Plus, we added two bonus tracks to the new digital release. So you’ll hear something never before released from a great jazz trio.
